The exclusion period
If you were removed from Australia or departed under a departure arrangement, you face a re-entry exclusion period. This is typically 3 years for people who departed voluntarily through the Status Resolution Service, or longer for people who were forcibly removed.
During the exclusion period, you cannot be granted most visas. Once the period expires, you can apply again.
After the exclusion period
Once the exclusion period has passed, you are eligible to apply. But the overstay remains permanently on your immigration record. Every future decision maker will see it. You will need to address it in your application: explain what happened, why it happened, and what has changed since.
If you now have stronger ties to your home country, stable employment, property, family obligations, or other factors that demonstrate you will comply with visa conditions, document these clearly.
