What the health requirement is
Most Australian visa categories require applicants and their family members to meet a health requirement. The Department conducts medical examinations through its panel physicians and assesses whether the applicant or their dependents have a medical condition likely to result in significant healthcare or community service costs, or require access to healthcare services that are in limited supply.
Conditions that commonly trigger health refusals include HIV, hepatitis B or C requiring treatment, renal failure requiring dialysis, intellectual or physical disabilities requiring ongoing support, cancer requiring treatment, and mental health conditions requiring ongoing psychiatric care.
Health waivers
Some visa categories allow the decision maker to waive the health requirement if there are compelling circumstances. Whether a waiver is available depends on the specific visa subclass. Partner visas, some family visas, and certain humanitarian visas allow health waivers. Skilled visas and student visas generally do not.
