Key Australian Visa Changes from July 1, 2025: Higher Income
Thresholds and Student Visa Fee Increases
Planning to move to Australia? You’re not alone—Australia continues to rank as one of the world’s most desirable destinations for relocation, recently earning the title of the second-happiest country to move to, just behind Switzerland. However, if you\’re considering making the move, it’s essential to be across the vital visa changes that came into effect on July 1, 2025.
Skilled Visa Updates
From July 1, the income thresholds for skilled visas have increased by 4.6%, reflecting national wage growth and ensuring fair labour conditions for both locals and migrants.
- Core Skills and Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT):
- Increased from $73,150 to $76,515
- Specialist Skills Income Threshold:
- Increased from $135,000 to $141,210
These updated thresholds mean employers must now offer higher minimum salaries when sponsoring new skilled visa applicants.
Increased Visa Application Fees
To keep pace with the Consumer Price Index (CPI), most visa subclasses have experienced a 3% fee increase. Here\’s a breakdown:
- Employer Nomination Scheme & Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional Visa:
Increased from $4,770 to $4,910
- Training Visa:
Increased from $415 to $430
- Partner Visa:
Increased from $9,095 to $9,365
Student Visa Overhaul
Student visa applicants will face significant changes, especially regarding costs and conditions:
- Visa Fee Increase:
Application fees have jumped 25%, from $1,600 to $2,000—far above the standard CPI adjustment.
- New Enrollment Requirement:
Students must now submit a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) as part of their visa application. Offer letters are no longer accepted.
- Updated Work Rights:
- Undergraduate students can now work up to 24 hours per week (previously 20 hours).
- Postgraduate students retain unlimited work rights.
- No Onshore Visa Extensions:
Students can no longer extend their visa while in Australia. If your visa expires, you’ll need to apply from outside the country.
These changes reflect the Australian government’s broader strategy to ensure sustainable migration, stronger job market alignment, and increased integrity in the student visa system. If you\’re planning a move or study in Australia, staying updated on these new rules is essential for a smooth transition.
