Latest points system

The 189 uses the general skilled migration points test, which has been stable in structure since late 2019. You need at least 65 points to enter the pool. That is the floor, not the target. Invitations go to the highest-ranked applicants, and in 2026 the median score for invited 189 applicants has sat around 90 points. So the real question is not whether you can reach 65, but how close you can get to the mid-80s and beyond. There is no state or family nomination bonus on the 189, so every point has to come from your own profile.

Points breakdown

Points are awarded across several categories. The main ones are:

  • Age, worth up to 30 points.
  • English language ability, worth up to 20 points.
  • Skilled employment experience, overseas and in Australia, worth up to 20 points combined.
  • Educational qualifications, worth up to 20 points.
  • A specialist education qualification, such as a STEM masters or doctorate, worth 10 points.
  • Partner skills, worth up to 10 points, or 10 points if you are single or have an Australian permanent resident or citizen partner.
  • Other points for Australian study, a professional year, a credentialled community language, and regional study.

Age points

Age is the biggest single category and the one you have the least control over, which is why timing matters. The highest band, 30 points, goes to applicants aged from 25 to 32. Points drop for each older band and reach zero once you turn 45, which is also the cut-off to be invited at all. If you are approaching a birthday that moves you into a lower band, getting your Expression of Interest in beforehand can be worth real points.

English points

English is the category most applicants can improve, and the returns are large. Competent English, roughly IELTS 6 in each band, is the minimum to qualify and scores zero points. Proficient English, around IELTS 7, adds 10 points. Superior English, around IELTS 8, adds 20 points. Moving from proficient to superior can add 10 points on its own, which for many applicants is the single fastest way to lift a borderline score. Note that test validity and accepted tests are subject to change, so confirm the current settings before you book.

Experience

Skilled employment points reward work in your nominated occupation or a closely related one. Overseas experience is worth up to 15 points, and Australian experience up to 20 points, but the combined total is capped at 20. Only work at a skilled level counts, and the assessing authority may set a deemed skilled date that determines when your countable experience begins. If you are close to a threshold, for example moving from five years to eight years of experience, waiting a little can add points.

Education

Qualifications are worth up to 20 points. A doctorate scores 20, a bachelor or masters degree scores 15, and a diploma or a recognised trade qualification scores 10. A separate 10 points is available for a specialist masters or doctorate in a STEM field completed at an Australian institution. Your qualifications also need to support the skills assessment for your occupation, so the two are linked.

Partner points

Partner points often decide close cases. You can claim 10 points if your partner meets the skills, age and English requirements, or if your partner is an Australian citizen or permanent resident. You can also claim 10 points for being single. A common trap is claiming partner points and then changing relationship status between invitation and lodgement, which can put the application at risk. The points you claim at invitation need to still be valid when you lodge.

Tips to increase your score

If your score is not competitive yet, focus on what you can actually change. In rough order of return for most applicants:

  • Lift your English. Moving to superior can add up to 20 points and is usually the fastest gain.
  • Add skilled work experience if you are near a threshold, keeping the 20-point combined cap in mind.
  • Claim partner points where eligible, or have your partner improve their English so they qualify.
  • Complete a professional year or a credentialled community language qualification if they apply to you.
  • Consider a 190 or 491, where nomination adds 5 or 15 points and can make the difference the 189 cannot.
