English points
English is the category most applicants can improve, and the returns are large. Competent English, roughly IELTS 6 in each band, is the minimum to qualify and scores zero points. Proficient English, around IELTS 7, adds 10 points. Superior English, around IELTS 8, adds 20 points. Moving from proficient to superior can add 10 points on its own, which for many applicants is the single fastest way to lift a borderline score. Note that test validity and accepted tests are subject to change, so confirm the current settings before you book.
Experience
Skilled employment points reward work in your nominated occupation or a closely related one. Overseas experience is worth up to 15 points, and Australian experience up to 20 points, but the combined total is capped at 20. Only work at a skilled level counts, and the assessing authority may set a deemed skilled date that determines when your countable experience begins. If you are close to a threshold, for example moving from five years to eight years of experience, waiting a little can add points.

Education
Qualifications are worth up to 20 points. A doctorate scores 20, a bachelor or masters degree scores 15, and a diploma or a recognised trade qualification scores 10. A separate 10 points is available for a specialist masters or doctorate in a STEM field completed at an Australian institution. Partner points

- Complete a professional year or a credentialled community language qualification if they apply to you.
- Consider a 190 or 491, where nomination adds 5 or 15 points and can make the difference the 189 cannot.
